New iPods, iPhones Forthcoming With The Launch Of iOS5/iCloud

by Graham Needham (BH) on 3rd October 2011

The time is almost upon us for new goodies from Apple. We have their official announcement tomorrow (Tuesday 4th October 2011) and from that point we should know about new iPhones, iPods, iOS 5 and iCloud.
MacStrategy's predictions
  1. iPod Touch 5th Generation
  2. Discontinuation of iPod Shuffle and iPod Classic models
  3. iPhone 4S
  4. iOS 5 launch date
  5. iCloud launch date
iPod 5
An updated model with better physical screen like the iPhone 4/4S (i.e. not just a "retina display") and maybe a better camera. The iPod classic is looking likely to be discontinued. Click wheel games have been removed from the iTunes store so if you have any click wheel games make sure you have a backup/archive of them for safe keeping.
iPhone 4S
Basically a revamped, faster iPhone 4 with an 8MP camera in black or white / 16GB, 32GB or 64GB models. Physical shape and size will basically remain the same so old cases should still fit. iPhone 4S will come standard with iOS 5.
iOS 5
Features known to be launching in iOS 5 include:
  • iTunes / PC not required - iOS 5 devices can be set up without a computer!
  • Twitter integration - deep and thorough apparently
  • System wide notifications plus reminders including the lock screen
  • Lock screen camera operation
  • Basic photo manipulation e.g. cropping in the Photos app
  • iMessage - a free text/instant messaging system
  • Newstand - a special location in iBooks for periodicals
Apple's web site states that iOS 5 will run on the iPhone 3GS and 4, any iPad and iPod Touch 3rd and 4th gen models.
iCloud
We have a special FAQ for UK users all about iCloud here.
