How To Obtain/Purchase macOS Server 5

macOS Server 5.2 is available to buy as an additional purchase on top of OS X 10.11 El Capitan or macOS 10.12 Sierra.

From The Mac App Store - If You Already Have OS X 10.11 or macOS 10.12

  1. To be safe:
    • Restart your computer.
    • Quit all running applications.
    • Disconnect all USB/FireWire devices.
    • Eject all optical discs.
    • Unmount all servers.
  2. Make sure you are connected to the internet by using a web browser to go to Apple.
  3. Go to macOS Server 5 on the Mac App Store Buy it now on the Mac App Store.
  4. This should open the Mac App Store application (if it doesn't click the "View in Mac App Store" button).
  5. In the Mac App Store application click the "Buy" button.
  6. Enter your Apple ID and password.
  7. The macOS Server 5 software should start to download (an icon will appear in your Dock with a progress bar).
  8. When the macOS Server 5 application has downloaded it may automatically launch and ask you to continue.
  9. If it does, do not click Continue yet.
  10. Quit the macOS Server 5 installer application (yes, quit it).
  11. Go to Macintosh HD > Applications and make a copy of/backup the "Server" item e.g. zip it and/or copy it to another disk or a DVD-R
  12. Go to Macintosh HD > Applications and open "Server".
  13. Click Continue, agree to the EULA and then click Continue to download and install the rest of the Server software and finish the configuration.
  14. Follow the on screen instructions.
  15. Once macOS Server 5 has installed you should go to Apple menu > Software Update and update all other Apple software (An Apple ID may be required for some updates).

From The Mac App Store - If You Have An Earlier Version Of OS X / OS X Server)

  1. Prepare for macOS 10.12 Sierra.
  2. Go to Apple's macOS Server: Setup and Administration web site and read through the information.
  3. Then when you are sure you are ready (you did read the Apple knowledge base articles didn't you?) to be safe:
    • Restart your computer.
    • Quit all running applications.
    • Disconnect all USB/FireWire devices.
    • Eject all optical discs.
    • Unmount all servers.
  4. Make sure you are connected to the internet by using a web browser to go to Apple.
  5. Go to macOS 10.12 Sierra on the Mac App Store Buy it now on the Mac App Store.
  6. This should open the Mac App Store application (if it doesn't click the "View in Mac App Store" button).
  7. In the Mac App Store application click the "Get" button.
  8. Enter your Apple ID and password.
  9. The macOS Sierra installer should start to download (an icon will appear in your Dock with a progress bar).
  10. NOTE: The Sierra installer is ~5GB in size. Without a fast internet connection the progress bar will take some time to actually show any progress - be patient while Mountain Lion downloads (go watch a film or two, do the shopping, get some sleep, etc).
  11. When the Sierra installer has downloaded it will automatically launch and ask you to continue.
  12. Do not click Continue yet.
  13. Quit the Sierra installer (yes, quit it).
  14. Go to Macintosh HD > Applications and make a copy of/backup the "Install macOS Sierra" item (~5GB in size) e.g. copy it to another disk or a USB stick
  15. You may also want to obtain the macOS install disc image.
  16. Go to Macintosh HD > Applications and open "Install macOS Sierra".
  17. Follow the on screen instructions.
  18. Once Sierra has installed go to macOS Server 5 on the Mac App Store Buy it now on the Mac App Store.
  19. This should open the Mac App Store application (if it doesn't click the "View in Mac App Store" button).
  20. In the Mac App Store application click the "Buy" button.
  21. Enter your Apple ID and password.
  22. The macOS Server 5 software should start to download (an icon will appear in your Dock with a progress bar).
  23. When the macOS Server 5 application has downloaded it may automatically launch and ask you to continue.
  24. If it does, do not click Continue yet.
  25. Quit the macOS Server 5 installer application (yes, quit it).
  26. Go to Macintosh HD > Applications and make a copy of/backup the "Server" item e.g. zip it and/or copy it to another disk or a DVD-R
  27. Go to Macintosh HD > Applications and open "Server".
  28. Click Continue, agree to the EULA and then click Continue to download and install the rest of the Server software and finish the configuration.
  29. Follow the on screen instructions.
  30. Once macOS Server 5 has installed you should go to Apple menu > Software Update and update all other Apple software (An Apple ID may be required for some updates).
