Article Brief Description:
Instructions for removing Microsoft Office 2016 / 365

How to Manually Remove Microsoft Office 2016

Some important points to note before proceeding:
  • These instructions will help you manually remove all the Microsoft Office software (including Microsoft OneNote), system items, preferences and email data.
  • Due to the sheer number of files and folders to be deleted we recommend you print this document first and tick off each line as you follow it.
  • The instructions below will delete some of your Office personal preferences and fonts plus your Office data such as email data/accounts/signatures/rules/schedules/attachments, calendar, tasks, notes and projects. If you want to backup/archive this data before deleting it, follow the instruction under "Backup/Archive Personal Data" first.
  • The instructions below include emptying the Trash so make sure you check the Trash for anything you may not want to actually delete.
  • These instructions will remove items for a specific version of Microsoft Office. However, some items are the same across Microsoft Office 2011 and 2016 so if you are removing either 2011 or 2016 but keeping the other version specific items not to be removed will be noted in red.
  • If you have upgraded from an earlier version of Microsoft Office and have used Outlook for your Email, Calendar, Contacts, Notes and/or Tasks you may not be able to simply go back to the old version of Outlook 2011 (or alternative apps) and access your data. Any data on IMAP or Exchange accounts should still be accessible as the data is stored on the server(s) but any POP email stored locally on your computer/downloaded via a POP account and/or calendars, contacts, notes or tasks will need to be exported before you delete the newer version of Outlook!
    • Email > create a folder called "Email Export" on your Desktop and in this folder you will first need to recreate the folders and subfolders structure you have in Outlook. Then go to each folder in Outlook, (Edit menu) Select All and drag all the emails to the relevant Folder in the Finder. You can then recreate your folder/subfolder structure in Outlook 2011 (or email application of your choice) and drag the .eml files into it.
    • Calendar > there is no easy way to export this data, sorry.
    • Contacts > create a folder called "Contacts Export" on your Desktop, go to your Contacts in Outlook and (Edit menu) Select All and drag all the contacts to your "Contacts Export" folder you created. You can then drag the .vcf files back into Outlook 2011 (or the contacts application of your choice).
    • Notes > create a folder called "Notes Export" on your Desktop, go to your Notes in Outlook and (Edit menu) Select All and drag all the Notes to your "Notes Export" folder you created - this will create .html files for each note which are, unfortunately, not easy to reimport back into another application but at least you can open the HTML files in a text editor application e.g. TextEdit and rip/copy the text out that you may want to keep.
    • Tasks > there is no easy way to export this data, sorry (dragging Tasks from Outlook 2016 creates .ics files - these may be compatible to drag back into Outlook 2011 but probably not any other application).

Backing Up Your Computer

You should always back up your computer before deleting software.

Manually Backup/Archive Personal Data

  1. Restart your computer (and login using an administrator account).
  2. If you have an Office 365 account, login to the account, locate the installation of the Office 2016 you are removing and "deactivate" it.
  3. Quit any running applications.
  4. On your desktop create a folder called "Microsoft Office Backup".
  5. Go to Macintosh HD > Users > ~your home directory > Library > Group Containers and copy the "UBF8T346G9.Office" folder to your Microsoft Office Backup folder.
  6. Go to Macintosh HD > Users > ~your home directory > Library > Preferences and copy the following files to your Microsoft Office Backup folder:
    • com.microsoft.autoupdate2.plist
    • com.microsoft.Excel.LSSharedFileList.plist
    • com.microsoft.Powerpoint.LSSharedFileList.plist
    • com.microsoft.Word.LSSharedFileList.plist
  7. Now archive the "Microsoft Office Backup" folder on your Desktop to another disk or a CD-R / DVD-R.

Manual Removal

NOTE: Depending on what Office software you have installed and/or used some or all of the following items may be present on your hard disk. If a listed item isn't on your hard disk, don't worry, ignore it and skip to the next step.
  1. Restart your computer (and login using an adminstrator account).
  2. Quit any running applications.
  3. Go to Apple Menu > System preferences > System > Accounts > your account name (on the left) > Login Items tab (on the right) and remove any Microsoft items.
  4. Go to Macintosh HD > Applications and delete the "Microsoft Excel" application.
  5. Go to Macintosh HD > Applications and delete the "Microsoft OneNote" application.
  6. Go to Macintosh HD > Applications and delete the "Microsoft Outlook" application.

    • "com.microsoft.Excel.LSSharedFileList.plist" file
    • "com.microsoft.Powerpoint.LSSharedFileList.plist" file
    • "com.microsoft.Word.LSSharedFileList.plist" file
  17. Delete the original installation receipts by doing the following:
    1. In the Finder go to the Go menu > Go to Folder…
    2. Enter "/private/var/db/receipts/"
    3. Delete the following items:
      • All files starting with "com.microsoft.package"
      • All files starting with "com.microsoft.pkg"
  18. Restart your computer.
  19. Empty the Trash.
  20. Remove the relevant Microsoft Office related icons from the Dock e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, OneNote (just drag the icon off of the dock to remove it).
