Article Brief Description:
Frequently Asked Questions about the iPhone 5c
Q. When was the iPhone 5c made available in the UK?
A. The iPhone 5c was made available on the 20th September 2013 and is now available to buy online.
Q. There's an iPhone 5s as well as an iPhone 5c. What's with that?
A. In the past Apple always sold the current iPhone and then the two previous versions of the iPhone would be available at cheaper prices e.g iPhone 5/4s/4. This time instead of iPhone 5s/5/4s being available the 5 is being completely replaced with a newer iPhone 5c model so the products available from 20th September 2013 will be iPhone 5s/5c/4s.
Q. Why are Apple replacing the iPhone 5?
A. Apart from cheaper pricing the iPhone 5c is available in different colours but most importantly it supports more 4G/LTE frequencies including those used by O2 UK, Three UK and Vodafone UK (which the iPhone 5 doesn't).
Q. What colours is the iPhone 5c available in?
A. White, pink/red, yellow, blue and green.
Q. What are the system requirements for using an iPhone 5c?
A. The following are required:
  • An Apple ID (for some features)
  • Internet access
  • Syncing with iTunes on a Mac or PC requires
    • Mac: OS X 10.6.8 or later
    • PC: Windows 8, Windows 7; Windows Vista; or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 3 or later
    • iTunes 11.1.0 or later
Q. I'm not running Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later. What can I do?
A. Buy Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and either run that or upgrade to the latest version of OS X.
Q. How much will the iPhone 5c cost?
A. 16GB = £469 or 32GB = £549. Cheaper prices on contract.
Q. Where can I buy the iPhone 5c or get an iPhone on contract in the UK?
A. Several places offer it for sale:
Q. iPhone 5c supports 4G/LTE in other countries outside of the USA. Can I take advantage of this in the UK?
A. Yes. The iPhone 5c supports various LTE/4G frequencies including those used in the UK.
Q. The iPhone 5c comes with a "Lightning" connector. Can I still connect it to my computer/older devices?
A. Potentially, yes. The iPhone 5c only comes with a Lightning to USB connector cable in the box which allows you to connect the iPhone 5c to your Mac or Windows PC. If you need compatibility with other devices you may need one of the following products:
  • Lightning to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter

Q. What's the difference between the iPhone 5c, 5s and 4s?
A. See Apple UK's comparison chart.
Q. Is the iPhone 5/4s/4 still available to buy?
A. The 4 and 5 have been discontinued but the iPhone 4s will now be available at a cheaper price than before:
  • iPhone 4s 8GB from £349 unlocked. Possible to obtain free on contract
Q. Is the iPhone 5c different in size to the iPhone 5/5s?
A. Yes. It's 8.97mm thick (slightly thicker), 124.4mm tall (slightly taller) and 59.2mm wide (slightly wider).
Q. Will my iPhone 5 case fit the new 5c?
A. As the 5c is a different size it is very unlikely that your old case will fit. Apple have made six new cases available specifically for the 5c to buy (£25 - available in black, white, pink/red, yellow, blue and green) plus third party companies will offer their own cases too.
Q. What are the primary new/upgraded features of the iPhone 5c compared to the 5?
Q. What mobile frequencies does the iPhone 5c support?
See this article.

A. It comes with iOS 7 and also includes the following apps free: iPhoto, iMovie, Pages, Numbers and Keynote (you previously had to pay for them!).
Q. I don't want iOS 7. Can I install/run an earlier version of iOS?
A. No.
Q. Is there a dock available for the iPhone 5c?
A. Yes - £25 from the Apple Store
